Problem opening .avi files in Quicktime

Hi
I have a problem with .avi files in Quicktime. My system stops and Firefox closes all windows.
Does anyone have a similar problem? Is there a simple solution to it?

open windows media player, and then manually open the file you are attempting to open. if the file plays without incident, then reinstall quicktime, if the media player closes like quicktime, then there is a problem with your codecs, and would suggest reinstalling them. *then reboot to take effect*

(been in hospital guys - broke my arm and 2 ribs)

pakbro: Are you sure that you have all your codecs? Inquisitor_UK tips are good. I also recommend you to have a look on www.free-codecs.com
